Is There Freedom in Forgetting or Being Forgotten?

Is There Freedom in Forgetting or Being Forgotten?

“A breathless Death is not so cold as a Death that breathes.” – Emily Dickinson

I’m no Dante, lost though I may be,
nor you my Beatrice, just as lost to me.

Yet the passions ring, silent to your ear—
O brooding lyric, lead on! Lo these many years:

In warm ink we poets write
excuses for the darkness of the night.

-

I dreamt your room I once belonged,
where we in solitude thronged,

two confined, chained soul-to-soul:
In me you sought, and found, parole,

though living, dying, always chains—mind
the key I held, fumbling, blind!

Will you let me in? I dare not ask.
Sobriety drinks that bitter flask.

-

Outside, in rain, in heat, in snow,
life passes, tipsy, slow,

and in me rivers, laden, flow—
carry dreams the tombs outgrow.

Diary

Ages ago I kept a diary in a hand legible to

to live. Who wrote those words belongs

to an empire that collapsed under its
own grandiose weight, its high priest

flapping against the sky and recalling that I am sky. Once,
the book well-thumbed and creased and read twice over,
I felt an ant crawl the length of my arm like a nagging
sense that

Foul Weather Friend

I am a foul weather friend, dear poetry.
I have paid you no mind when spring rains
wash clean the marble statues of gods
and a cheery sun
reads aloud your sweet inscriptions,
nor when awed children skip through museums,
nor accordion-song fills the subway,
nor a stranger does another stranger
a kindness,
nor blueberries are so ripe they bleed sugar,
nor velvet chocolate cake knocks you dizzy with love,
nor, after making love, my wife’s perfume
clings
