Idiopathic

A child in Bend points to her neck
and asks how the blood got there.

Students in New Delhi demand

Hillsides in Malibu look for choppers
to spit seawater on their wounds

and my power is out, unlit trees look
over their shoulders, strawberries

cover their grief in veils of mold,
the air smells of diesel and ash,

firing squads ready their rifles,
satellites fail, or are made to fail.

Where am I to flee? Paris burns too,
and Jakarta, Tirana, Brussels, Kyiv...

If the State asks why I bothered with poetry
answer he lost his mind and you know why.

nor a stranger does another stranger
a kindness,
nor blueberries are so ripe they bleed sugar,
nor velvet chocolate cake knocks you dizzy with love,
nor, after making love, my wife’s perfume
clings
