National Anthem
January 26, 2026

Another peaceful protestor murdered by ICE

You want to stand at attention, mouthing the words.
You want to hold your hand over your heart, proud.
You want to believe your fellow citizens believe in
what they are singing. You want to trust they won’t
cheer on murder. You want moral imagination.
You want them to kneel, to cry, to chant, to march.
You want rage at platitudes, calls for de-escalation,
talk of both-sides. You want justice and for them
to want justice, too. But the song is over and the
crowd is seated comfortably, enjoying the game.
