El Motor de los Arboles / The Engine of the Trees
October 21, 2017

Y la brújula en tu pecho me desorienta;

The Engine of the Trees

The engine of the trees buzzes. The dew is shaken,
Then lands in the mud on the wings of leaves.
The sheets contain us in their fuselage, and through the window
The world shines like naked aluminum.

On our backs, more quiet than a cemetery, we travel
The planet’s architecture. We pray with a pious sigh
That passes by a church of stone and the murmurs of water;
Your body touches my skin like the shade of a fan.

I breathe as though I lacked oxygen and you supplied it.
Your eyes burn with the fuel of my inner fire,
And the compass in your chest disorients me;
How did you manage to rescue me from the day-to-day?

The engine of the trees buzzes. The dew is shaken,
Then takes off toward the heights that are beyond my reach.
I clench you until the watches cease to tell time
And I neither care, nor realize, that you have left me.
